19th century Chinese black lacquer and gilt games box, of rectangular form with canted corners, the body decorated with figures amidst pagodas and prunus trees contained within stylised foliate borders, the cover further detailed with the Cook Family crest and moto 'Tutum Monstrat Iter' (He Showeth a safe road). Opening to reveal an interior fitted with twelve trays, mostly decorated as court and pip cards, together with seven lidded boxes containing forty eight narrow rectangular, twenty rectangular, and twenty three circular mother of pearl counters, each engraved with intricate figural narrative scenes to one side, and Cook Family crest to the other, plus a number of small Groatie Buckie Cowrie shell counters, box H12cm, L38cm, D31cm Together with a selection of documents relating to the Cook family, including one entitled 'Royal Company of Archers, Queen's body Guard for Scotland', admitting John Cook Esquire (1813 - 1891), with seal, and another entitled 'The Speculative Society' admitting Mr John Hope Cook, (1918 – 2002), with seal and accompanying envelope.
