The exciting sale on the afternoon of Friday 24th June features Raich Carters Personal Archive
of his sporting life and career and thence by family descent, as well as an extensive private lifelong collection of Hull memorabilia and items of Yorkshire interest (and beyond!). Highlights include important and rare early Raich Carter memorabilia, in particular, his own personal biographical scrap-book in two volumes (lot 3516) and an interview recording of John Lennon conducted by a student of Hull University in 1964 (lot 3571).

Raich Carter - important and rare early memorabilia being his own personal biographical scrap-book in two volumes starting c1921 when he was at Hendon Boys School in Sunderland. The first volume contains a large number of official and unofficial photographs and paper ephemera including newspaper cuttings, manuscript and typed letters and documents predominantly annotated by Carter himself in ink, including 1929 School leaving report, various school sports reports, England Boys Team 1928, first game for Sunderland 1932 aged eighteen, Durham County Cricket Club team 1933, England Tour of Hungary 1934 with photograph signed by each player, 1936 Sunderland Championship winning dinner menu signed by players and officials, Sunderland F.A. Cup win 1937, WW2 items including original Allied Expeditionary Force Permit to play for F.A. Services XI in international match against France in Paris 1944, numerous other WW2 games and events, 1946 F.A. Cup Final and Semi-Final programmes when with Derby, also Derby Mayoral Reception Programme with multiple signatures, 1946 Derbyshire County Cricket Team, 1947 England v France at Highbury photograph meeting Ernest Bevan and signed by numerous players, 1948 leaving Derby County presentation and events etc. The second volume is equally well stocked with annotated official and unofficial photographs and paper ephemera starting in 1948 when Carter left Derby County to become player/manager at Hull City. This volume concentrates on his time with The Tigers and the ups-and-downs he experienced whilst there, including photographs of Richard Attenborough's visit in 1948, business and board meetings, social ans promotional engagements, official visits including Hull Fish Docks, Metal Box Company etc, 1949 promotion Celebrations and Civic Dinner Menu card, signing of Don Revie, Tour of Turkey, much about his 1951 decision to leave football and open a sweets and tobacconist shop in Hull and the subsequent controversy called locally 'The Carter Situation' resulting in his re-instatement as a player two months later, announcement of his 'retirement' in 1952 followed by him signing for Cork Athletic in 1953, photographs of the Main Stand fire at Elland Road when he was at Leeds United and his move to Macclesfield Town. The volumes concentrate on his early life and career up to leaving Hull City with only sparse entries afterwards terminating in his sacking by Middlesbrough in 1966 and gives a real insight into the life of a professional sportsman in the mid-20th century.
