Our annual Summer Art Sale, a much-anticipated event, has recently concluded, leaving behind a trail of awe and inspiration.

The auction featured nearly 300 exquisite pieces, including oils, watercolours, drawings and prints. The versatile selection spanned centuries, from masterpieces dating back to the 1600s to contemporary works. 

As we reflect on the auction highlights, we invite you to join us in revisiting the key moments from the sale and exploring the impressive prices at which these masterpieces achieved.

Lot 81. Sold £460. Frank Henry Mason (Staithes Group 1875-1965): "Birdland on the Yorkshire Coast". This gouache, signed with initials and titled on the printed base beneath the mount, depicts egg collectors climbing Flamborough Head with a telescopic view transposed onto a bird's egg. The piece measures 26cm x 19cm. Notably, just before auctioning, it was discovered that this artwork was a design for a railway poster.

 

Lot 171. Sold £1,400. Attributed to Walter Richard Sickert RA RBA (British 1860-1942): "La Giuseppina". This pen, ink, and black chalk drawing, unsigned and measuring 16.5cm x 14cm (unframed). Notes: for a similar drawing, c.f. 'Chicken - Girl at a Piano', ('Sickert', Wendy Baron, London: Phaidon, 1973, p.367), sold Dreweatts 19th October 2022 Lot 32.

 

Lot 205. Sold £650. Lin Jammet (British 1958-2017): "The Fall of Desaix". This screenprint, signed, dated '97, and inscribed 'GSL I' (Gresham Studio Ltd) in pencil with Gamma blindstamp, measures 115cm x 79cm. Jammet, son of artist Dame Elisabeth Frink and architect Michel Jammet, began printmaking in the 1970s with family friend Julian Trevelyan, later producing prints with Curwen Chilford and Gresham Studio.

Lot 239. Sold £2,500. George Weatherill (British 1810-1890): "Sailing Vessels Becalmed off Whitby at Sunset". This watercolour, signed and measuring 13.5cm x 23.5cm, beautifully captures the serene evening scene with sailing vessels at rest.

 

Lot 97. Sold £750. Charles Meryon (French 1821-1868): "Le Pont-au-Change (The Exchange Bridge) - Paris". This drypoint etching, inscribed in the plate, measures 14cm x 32cm, showcasing Meryon's intricate detailing of the Parisian bridge.

 

Lot 95. Sold £1,100. Lydia Beresford Bruce (British 19th/20th Century): "Sri Lankan Meeting Place". This watercolour, signed and dated 1908, measures 17cm x 24cm. Bruce, known for her work "Sketches of Ceylon" published by Cassell and Company in 1914, has masterfully captured a scene in Sri Lanka.

Lot 180. Sold £2,600. George Richmond RA (British 1809-1896): "Portrait of a Young Lady, Said to be Charlotte Brontë". This pencil and coloured chalks drawing, unsigned and measuring 27cm x 18cm, includes partial Sotheby's catalogue entry verso, dated 2nd November, Lot 30.

 

Lot 146. Sold £550. William Shackleton (Bradford 1872-1933): "The Road into Malham Village". This watercolour and pastel, signed and dated '25, is titled on the verso and measures 27cm x 22cm. Shackleton's delicate work captures the serene entrance into the village.

 

Lot 103. Sold £2,600. Peter Brook (Northern British 1927-2009): "Telegraph Wires at the Road Junction". This oil on board, signed and dated by the artist circa 1955 on the hand-written verso, measures 75cm x 50cm. Provenance reveals it came from a West Yorkshire deceased estate, where the owner was a good friend of the artist.
