We are delighted to announce a special event this week, celebrating the life and work of the great Yorkshire marine artist, Jack Rigg. In partnership with his family, we are hosting a unique exhibition and online auction that offers a rare opportunity to acquire pieces from Rigg's personal collection. This exclusive exhibition features 54 of his paintings, drawings, and prints, many of which have never been seen by the public before.

We are deeply honoured to have been chosen by Jack Rigg’s family to commemorate his remarkable life and career. As Dominic Cox, our Head of Art, remarked, "Following Jack’s death last August, the family wished to celebrate his legacy with a retrospective. We are privileged to host this event at our Vine Street Salerooms, which played a significant role in bringing his work to the world."

Jack Rigg's journey to becoming a distinguished marine artist is truly inspirational. Born in Leeds, he first saw the sea at the age of five during a visit to Whitby. Leaving school at 14, he worked in the textile industry until he was 50. Only then did this self-taught artist commit to painting full-time, dedicating the next four decades to capturing the essence of British maritime life, particularly along the East Coast.

Rigg's dedication to his craft was extraordinary. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, he would often wade into harbours, sketching in his wellington boots to achieve the perfect perspective.

Jack Rigg’s artwork is internationally acclaimed, with pieces held in prestigious collections such as Buckingham Palace, the White House, and various public institutions around the globe. His work also graces the homes of countless fishermen and seafarers, who deeply appreciate his authentic depictions of maritime scenes.

The exhibition is open Monday-Friday, 10am - 4pm until Friday 26 July, at our Vine Street Salerooms in Scarborough. The accompanying timed online auction will conclude from 5pm on Sunday 28 July. This unique event not only honours Jack Rigg’s legacy but also offers collectors an extraordinary opportunity to acquire pieces from his private collection.
