Provenance: formerly the property of Sir Alfred James Munnings (1878-1959); by descent from the collection of Alfred Sage, Custodian of Castle House, Dedham (the artist's home from 1919 until his death and later opened as the Munnings Art Museum) in the 1980s, where acquired from Castle House. Churchill and Munnings were good friends, with the latter being a member of Churchill's dining society 'The Other Club'. Churchill visited and painted Venice multiple times; an autograph painting of the same scene dated 1951 was sold Sotheby's London 17th November 2015 Lot 19.
