Ihon (John) Coggs of Fleet Street, London,- George II brass circumferentor (theodolite) c1730, housing a cylindrical glazed compass with a steel indicating hand and engraved (formerly silvered) eight point compass rose to the centre, outer track divided into two-degree intervals and a subsidiary Arabic numeral chapter ring divided into ten minute intervals, mounted on a 12" cast brass four spoke circular table engraved on the circumference in one degree increments from 0-360 degrees, with makers name and mounting points for vertical sights. John Coggs is recorded as a mathematical instrument maker and engraver, working in Fleet Street from 1710-40 The introduction of advanced surveying instruments such as this circumferentor revolutionized the field of land surveying. Surveyors could now conduct their work with a level of precision that was previously unattainable, leading to more accurate maps and a better understanding of geographical features.
