Discover an exquisite piece from the workshop of William Hayler of Chatham, Kent, with this fine George III black japanned chinoiserie decorated longcase clock dating back to circa 1760. The clock features a hood with a break arch top, glazed side panels, and three matching wooden finials. The hood door below is adorned with attached pilasters. The long trunk boasts a break arch door and moulded surround, resting on a square double stepped plinth with a flat base.
This stunning timepiece is intricately adorned with scenes of gilt pagodas, temples, birds, people, and panels of floral decoration throughout the case and hood. The brass dial is embellished with cast brass spandrels, a silvered boss to the arch, a silvered chapter with Roman numerals, minute track, and five-minute Arabics. The matted dial centre includes a seconds dial, date aperture, matching steel hands, and a silvered cartouche with the maker's name.
The clock is powered by a five-pillar rack striking movement with a recoil anchor escapement, accompanied by a pendulum, weights, and key. William Hayler's legacy is traced back to the High Street in Chatham, operating between 1750-1810, with a possibility of two makers (father & son) succeeding each other in the workshop.
