John Atkinson Grimshaw (British 1836-1893): Whitby from Scotch Head, oil on board signed and dated 1886+, 24cm x 37.5cm Provenance: private collection, purchased David Duggleby Ltd 8th December 2014 Lot 75; David Duggleby Whitby 14th September 2004 Lot 249; Phillips Leeds 16th November 1999 Lot 321. Sold together with a copy of the Phillips catalogue, which reads: "One of Grimshaw's favourite views, the fishing town of Whitby, was to feature in the artist's career from 1867 until around 1888. The composition and play of light is typical of what the artist achieved in his pictures, and an interesting point in this particular example is the very clear outlines around the cottages and other buildings in the far distance, the glazing i.e. transparent washes of oil paint is clearly apparent throughout the picture. We are grateful to Alexander Robertson for his assistance in preparing this entry." Alexander Robertson (1945-2024) was former curator of Leeds Art Gallery and the leading expert on Atkinson Grimshaw; his 1998 monograph is the authoritative work on the artist.
