Our forthcoming Asian Art sale presents a rich and varied selection of works spanning China, Japan and beyond, bringing together ceramics, lacquerware, furniture, paintings and textiles that reflect the depth and refinement of Asian artistic traditions.
Japanese works feature prominently, including a striking Imari porcelain figure of a Bijin, richly decorated with floral motifs and gilt detailing, and a finely crafted lacquered suzuri-bako writing box, intricately worked with mother-of-pearl inlay and maki-e decoration depicting a golden pheasant. These pieces highlight the technical skill and decorative sophistication of Japanese craftsmanship.
Chinese art forms a central part of the sale, led by an impressive late Qing dynasty ancestral portrait, a large and detailed composition depicting multiple generations in formal dress, offering both artistic and historical significance. Further highlights include a carved altar tablet with dragon decoration and calligraphy, and a 19th century black lacquer marriage cabinet, decorated with gilt chinoiserie scenes.
Ceramics are well represented, with examples ranging from blue and white wares, including a meiping vase and export plates, to a set of famille rose ‘Wu Shang Pu’ jars. Decorative pieces such as a lacquered fitted box of export dishes add further variety and charm.
The sale also includes paintings and textiles, notably a Chinese kesi silk ‘Peach Festival’ scroll, depicting Daoist immortals in a celebratory scene, alongside modern works such as a watercolour by Ivan Peries, a member of the influential Colombo ‘43 Group.
