Presented by Duggleby Auctioneers, this exceptional early 19th-century English cello is a masterpiece crafted by Samuel Gilkes of London around 1820. The instrument features a two-piece back and a pine table, elegantly finished in a rich golden brown varnish. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from D.R. Hill & Son in Buckinghamshire, this cello is documented as number H494 in their official records.
This exquisite cello comes complete with a protective Hiscox hard case, ensuring its safekeeping for years to come. Additionally, the lot includes two horsehair cello bows for a complete set. The first bow is an English example bearing the stamp of Ferranda Millars Liverpool, while the second bow is a German piece stamped with R. Paesold's mark. Both bows are adorned with ebonised mother of pearl/abalone frogs and ivory tip plates, adding a touch of sophistication to this already remarkable collection.
