Harold Conway was born on the 27th January 1872 in Wimbledon; bizarrely, he was christened Harold Edgar Conway (and this remained his legal name), but he almost exclusively signed his paintings 'Edward Conway'. Perhaps he felt the name better suited him. He studied at the Slade School of Art and Académie Julian, where he likely met other future members of the Staithes Group. He lived for most of his life in Burford, Oxfordshire, where he died on 26th June 1949, aged 77. The artist seems to have been primarily a painter of flowers, both as still lifes (in minutely detailed oil paintings) and as the primary subject of a landscape (in looser watercolour paintings). Conway exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1915 and 1919, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the Goupil Gallery, London. An oil study of flowers by him is in the collection of the Pannett Gallery, Whitby.
