Following the success of our prestigious bi-annual Country House Sale on Saturday 15th March, we’re back with a closer look at more standout pieces from this exceptional auction. With over 450 carefully selected lots, the sale featured a fantastic array of furniture, Mouseman pieces, and antique clocks, all of which captured the attention of collectors and enthusiasts alike. The auction was a thrilling event, with competitive bidding driving many remarkable lots to exceed expectations.

From beautifully crafted wooden treasures to sought-after designs by Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson and Peter 'Rabbitman' Heap of Wetwang, these pieces highlight the enduring appeal of fine craftsmanship and timeless style.

 

Furniture 


The auction presented a stunning selection of antique furniture, where finely crafted pieces from various periods truly stood out. From intricately carved 17th-century oak cupboards to elegant 19th-century campaign chests, the range highlighted the timeless appeal of well-made furniture.

Lot 1350, a 17th-century inlaid oak court cupboard, featured intricate arcade and lozenge carvings, foliate motifs, and a moulded frame with chip-carved decoration, selling for £1,000. Lot 1228, an early 19th-century teak and brass-bound silver campaign chest, fitted with brass L-shaped brackets, heavy carrying handles, and ‘R. Cooper & Son’ brass locks, also realised £1,000. Meanwhile, Lot 1316, a George III oak dresser base, with a moulded frieze rail, turned quarter columns, and ogee-arched fielded panel doors, achieved £1,000.

Lot 1320, a set of ten oak Windsor dining chairs, which attracted strong bidding and sold for £1,400. Lot 1341, a Georgian design walnut drum table, featuring a leather-inset top with gilt decoration and a baluster pedestal with acanthus leaf carving, achieved £1,300. Finally, Lot 1303, a Thomas Lloyd two-seat Chesterfield sofa, with a traditional rolled back and arms upholstered in deeply buttoned green leather, also fetched £1,300. These results highlight the continued appreciation for high-quality craftsmanship and timeless design in antique and classic furniture.

 

Mouseman and Yorkshire Oak

A fantastic selection of Mouseman pieces by the workshop of Robert Thompson of Kilburn saw strong results, with everything from charming small accessories to substantial furniture attracting keen bidding.

Quirky and collectible pieces performed well, including Lot 1200, an oak wall clock with a moulded octagonal mount and brass-cased bulkhead timepiece, which sold for £440, and Lot 1214, a wedge-of-cheese-shaped money box, which achieved £480. Lot 1206, a circular tooled oak fruit bowl, fetched £300.

Traditional furniture designs also commanded impressive prices. Lot 1219, an oak coffee table with an octagonal adzed top and cruciform base, sold for £750, and Lot 1224, a 6' oak sideboard with panelled doors, wrought metal latches, and octagonal feet, was the highest-selling Mouseman lot at £2,300. Meanwhile, Lot 1217, a three-legged oak milking stool with a dished kidney-shaped seat, realised £380. These results reflect the enduring appeal of Mouseman craftsmanship, with both functional furniture and characterful decorative pieces continuing to captivate collectors.

 

Clocks

 

The selection of antique clocks in this auction truly captivated bidders, with each timepiece offering a unique blend of artistry and precision. From ornate carriage clocks that spoke to the elegance of the mid-19th century, to striking longcase clocks adorned with intricate chinoiserie designs, these pieces proved highly desirable.

Lot 1180, a mid-19th-century carriage clock by Auguste of Paris, featured an elegant foliate-engraved case with acorn finials and a repeat function, selling for £360. Lot 1199, a George III black japanned chinoiserie longcase clock by William Hayler of Chatham, stood out with its intricate gilt decoration depicting pagodas and floral motifs, achieving £1,000. Equally striking was Lot 1192, a late 19th-century Vienna regulator wall clock, boasting an elaborately carved walnut case with a grotesque pediment and grand sonnerie striking movement, which sold for £500. Meanwhile, Lot 1187, a Winterhalder and Hoffmeier Edwardian oak-cased mantel clock, featuring a break arch pediment, reeded pilasters, and a nine-gong chiming mechanism, also realised £360. These results reflect the strong demand for both decorative and functional timepieces from different eras.
