The Modern Living & Design Auction, ending 4 September, brings together a curated selection of mid-century, contemporary and statement interior pieces, with furniture, lighting, ceramics, rugs and decorative design represented throughout. The catalogue offers a varied mix for collectors and design-led interiors buyers, from recognised makers and sculptural forms to studio ceramics and modern works of art.

Furniture of Statement Form

The carefully curated furniture selection in the sale brings together pieces with strong design identity, from an internationally recognised chair to Danish storage and bold ceramic-topped tables.

A standout is the Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller lounge chair, Lot 8000, manufactured under licence by Hille of London. With its moulded veneered plywood shell, buttoned black leather upholstery, separate headrest and back cushions, padded armrests and black cast aluminium five-star swivel base, it has the instantly recognisable profile that has made the Eames lounge chair one of the most celebrated designs of the 20th century. It carries an estimate of £2,000 to £3,000.

Danish mid-century design appears in the Clausen & Son Silkeborg teak highboard wall unit, Lot 8029, estimated at £150 to £250. The upper modular section combines open shelving, smoked glass sliding doors and 12-inch record divisions, while the lower section is fitted with four central drawers flanked by sliding cupboard doors. At over two metres wide, it offers both display and storage, with the warm teak surface and clean proportions associated with 1960s Scandinavian interiors. For a more graphic interior accent, the Juliette Belarti for Adri nest of three brutalist design tables, Lot 8001, is estimated at £200 to £400. Dating from the 1960s to 1970s, the tables combine ceramic tiled tops with chrome frames, creating a layered, textural look that feels playful, architectural and very much of its period.

Design Details in Glass and Ceramic

The decorative objects in the sale show how smaller pieces can transform an interior, adding shape, colour and texture without overwhelming a room.

Studio pottery is led by the Sylvia Vallance for Troika Double Bass vase, Lot 8006, estimated at £300 to £500. A large 1970s example, the vase has a rectangular and rounded section, with opposing faces decorated in raised, impressed and incised geometric motifs in typical Troika colours. The painted “Troika St Ives” mark and artist’s monogram to the base add further collector interest. Glass collectors will note the Lalique frosted glass Kingfisher, Lot 8081, estimated at £50 to £80. Engraved Lalique France and offered boxed, the compact 7cm model captures the crisp, sculptural finish associated with the Lalique name, making it a neat display piece for a shelf, cabinet or desk.

Colour and Art Deco revival come together in the Wedgwood Bizarre by Clarice Cliff twin-handled Lotus Jug, Lot 8152, decorated in the Orange Roofed Cottage design. Hand painted after an original pattern and offered boxed, the 31cm jug is estimated at £80 to £120. With its bold shape and lively decoration, it brings an unmistakable Clarice Cliff energy to the sale.

Art With Contemporary Character

The art selection brings together works with strong visual identity, offering pieces that can add individuality, depth and atmosphere to a modern interior.

Sir Brian Clarke’s After Densitometry, Lot 8122, is a limited edition artist’s proof screenprint, signed and dated 1980 in pencil. Estimated at £200 to £400, the unframed work measures 58cm x 93cm and was commissioned to mark the opening of Olympus’ European headquarters in Hamburg. Clarke was an architectural artist born in Lancashire, and this piece brings a crisp graphic quality well suited to modern interiors. A very different mood appears in Beryl Cook’s Ladies Who Lunch, Lot 8128, estimated at £200 to £300. This limited edition coloured lithograph is signed and numbered 523/650 in pencil, with the title recorded on the certificate of authenticity verso. Cook’s work is known for its warmth, humour and affectionate observation of everyday social life, and this print captures that instantly recognisable tone.

Marcus Hammond’s Guerilla Bay Interior NSW, Lot 8136, offers an atmospheric contemporary landscape subject. Painted in oil on board, signed with monogram and dated 2002, it measures 61cm x 81cm and is titled on a label verso. Estimated at £150 to £250, it brings a quieter, more contemplative note to the selection, with its connection to New South Wales adding international character.
