On Friday 20th September, we hosted our highly anticipated Autumn Art Sale at David Duggleby Auctioneers and Valuers. It's a seasonal event that celebrates some of the finest works in the art world. 

The exclusive auction featured an exceptional array of fresh-to-market pictures, private lifetime collections, and individual masterpieces across various genres and periods. It included artwork from the 19th Century, early 20th Century and mid 20th Century. Prior to the auction date, the sale was featured by The BBC, The Yorkshire Post, The Scarborough News and many more news outlets.

The sale was a massive success, with several standout pieces achieving impressive results. Highlights include John Maclauchlan Milne's 'Cowan's Corner - Corrie' which sold for £19,000, and Edward Seago's 'Honfleur' fetching £12,000. Strong performances across the board, from renowned artists like Laurence Stephen Lowry and Stanisława de Karłowska, contributed to the overall triumph of the auction.

A depiction of St John and the Lamb of God, painted in oil on canvas. Unsigned. Sold: £1,300.

Lot Number: 37 - Robert Jobling (Staithes Group, 1841-1923)
Looking Out to Sea - Staithes Fisherwoman and Daughter, a watercolour painting, signed and dated 1908. Sold: £1,600.

Lot Number: 192 - Albert Ludovici Jnr. (British, 1852-1932)
The Piano Recital, an oil painting on panel, signed by the artist. Sold: £1,000.

 

Lot Number: 176 - William Gunning King (British, 1859-1940)
'June Roses' an oil painting on canvas, signed. Provenance: private local collection, purchased at Christie's in June 1989, titled "Lovers' Tryst"; exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1893. Sold: £3,000.

Lot Number: 270 - Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA RA (Northern British, 1887-1976)
'Berwick-on-Tweed' a limited edition offset lithograph in colours on wove, signed in pencil with Fine Art Trade Guild blindstamp, published by Medici Society Ltd., London, 1973. Sold: £8,200.

'Low Tide Robin Hood's Bay' a watercolour painting, signed and titled on a gallery label verso. Provenance: private collection, purchased from Walker Galleries, Harrogate (label verso). Sold: £1,600.

 

Lot Number: 126 - Edwin John Ellis (British, 1841-1895)
'Fisherfolk 'Under the East Cliff Hastings' an oil painting on canvas, signed and dated 1870, titled on the stretcher with the artist's London address verso. Housed in an impressive heavy gilt frame.
Sold: £1,600.

Lot Number: 215 - Edward Seago (British, 1910-1974)
'Honfleur' Normandy, France, an oil painting on board, signed and titled verso. Provenance: gifted directly to the vendor's family by the artist. Sold: £12,000.

Lot Number: 95 - Joseph Arnold (Hull, active 1895-1916)
'St Ellesmere with the Fleet - North Sea' a watercolour painting of a Hull steam trawler at sea, signed, inscribed, and dated 1913. Notes: Joseph Arnold, primarily known for painting trawlers in the North Sea box fleet, may have been a fisherman himself. From 1895-1899, he lived at 50 Portland Street, Hull, and from 1900-1916 at 1 Chomley Street. His works are housed in Hull Maritime Museum, with his portrait of the ST Lord Knollys in the Fisheries and Maritime Museum, Esbjerg, Denmark. Sold: £1,000.
